Samoa anybody??

So I am often asked if "Are you mixed?" and its usually because I don't look fully black or, for the more obvious reason, becuse of my huge Samoan tribal tattoo down my right arm. I am always prepared to say "Yea, I mixed with Black and Samoan" and I too often hear, "Huh!? black and what?". I then proceed by explaining what Samoan is and usually have to reffer to "The Rock" or "Junior Seau" for people to recognize what I am talking about. Even with those references, people still don't really know about Samoa! I want you to see if your friends and associates know anything about Samoa! Heres what I want you to do, throughout your day take a few seconds and ask people you come in contact with, "Hey! do you know anything about 'Samoa'?" and just see if you get the same type of funny faces I do when I mention it. Tell me about what happens. :)

Feels good not to be alone!

Well this is something I am fairly new at and I have already found that I am falling for the whole "blogging" idea. I chose to do a blog on Samoan Culture because I not only wanted to educate people about MY culture but also to sort of educate myself. I must be honest and say that I did not fully embrace the culture growing up here in the United States. I am half Samoan and half black and I grew up in predominately black neighborhood with similar schools. My mom did all she could to make me learn and appreciate the culture. I did not do too well, so now that I am older and more mature I am doing all I can to learn and let it be known! In the course of creating this blog, I did a few searches on other blogs and one that has continued to stick out and catch my eye is a blog named "Daughters of Samoa". It is a very personal and detailed blog about a Samoan woman who was born and raised in Samoa. She has several post that talk about her personal experiences growing up and living in Samoa. She also educates her viewers on several subjects of Samoan Culture, such as: Customs, Education, Family life, Growing up, Parenting, etc. I would suggest visiting the blog and taking a good look around. She is very friendly and responds very quickly to posts! Hopefully my blog can be half as good! Check out the link (Samoan Woman) in the "Links to Life" section.
